Australia’s World Cup hopes dented after draw with depleted Oman

Australia are almost certainly facing a dreaded route to next year’s World Cup via play-offs after being held to a 2-2 draw against Oman.

The Socceroos twice led through Jamie Maclaren and Aaron Mooy in Muscat, but were pegged back by Abdullah Fawaz’s double strike. The result means Australia are three points behind second-placed Japan with two games to play in the third stage of Asian qualifying for Qatar 2022.
